Noise Rock has all the best bass for heavy music. KEN Mode from Canada are a particularly good example, their bass parts are a huge part of their songs - the guitar generally is forced into the higher register for texturing and the bass actually drives the rhythmic riffing. If you want to find good heavy bass in contemporary music, it's all happening in Noise Rock and bands influenced by Noise Rock.

Guns N’ Roses are overrated by todays standards, they were actually cooler during the wilderness years before they became popular again. Appetite for Destruction is played out by this point. Their best work are the Use Your Illusion albums. I’d put em in the mid tier rankings because Axl Rose historically was the biggest douchebag in rock. Otherwise they’d be in the higher tiers. Also, their fanbase has always been toxic. smh…. Especially back in the day. However, Slash’s consistency in music during the years he was outta the band is what kept the bands name popular, more than Axl taking over a decade to make a shit album with a phantom lineup.

OK,,Ive been playing bass for a very long time ( almost 40 years). The thing with metal bass is that most metal bass players are pretty fucking basic in how they play. Most only think they have to play only on the E and A strings and ignore the D and G strings. They ignore mode scales completely and have no clue how to use them. Hell,, a pentatonic of a lydian scale as a fill can make a plain metal song devastating to a casual listener. Bass players need to learn jazz bass and how it works. Play only two strings ( E and A)? Why? I play a five string and use at least four per song my band plays. Bass isnt just for low end or to make the root note of a guitar part deeper. I had students learn just a couple things like this and sound ten times better to the listener than they really are. Believe me,, learning melodies and counter melodies and how they interact with what others are playing will be a major step forward.

There's a noisecore band called Sete Star Sept who uses bass and drums only, really really chaotic music but it shows how much mangling the tone of a bass can cause absolute audio destruction. There's a lot of other underground metal bands that base their sound entirely around bass (specifically grindcore and powerviolence), Thetan comes to mind. I was previously in a band that had TWO bass players, mine was fuzzed out and overdriven to shit and the other was clean. Made some KILLER tones there.

Spot on. Like many goalkeepers become goalkeepers because they can't play football, metal bass players become bass players because they are not good enough to be guitarists. Goalkeeping is a different role, and so is Bass player. I'd even go so far to say that a bass in the right, well practiced hands beats any guitar player anytime.

Purple Dunlop Tortex are my go-to. Basic, but good. I've tried jazz picks, and while they're great for soloing, I found them to be pretty lacking when it comes to playing thick chunky riffs with strong pick attack.
